Home Devotions
“Hear, O Israel: The LORD our God, the LORD is one. You shall love the LORD your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your might. And these words that I command you today shall be on your heart. You shall teach them diligently to your children, and shall talk of them when you sit in your house, and when you walk by the way, and when you lie down, and when you rise. You shall bind them as a sign on your hand, and they shall be as frontlets between your eyes. You shall write them on the doorposts of your house and on your gates.”
Deuteronomy 6:4-9 ESV
As the head of the family should teach [the faith] in a simple way to his household…
Preface to the Small Catechism (1529)
Faith formation begins in the home. God has given parents the responsibility of teaching the faith to their children. Marriages are made stronger when husbands and wives read the Scriptures and pray together. Those who are unmarried sanctify their homes through the Word of God and prayer.
We encourage you to develop a home devotional habit. To help you, we publish a Weekly Home Devotional Guide that is updated every Sunday. Each week includes Scripture readings keyed to the 3-year lectionary, a section of the Small Catechism, and texts to prepare children and adults for Sunday bible study.
